“In ‘Til the River Calms by Julia Maiola, the author presents an alternate version of 1835. War erupts in Arregia and Verlutte over gold discovered in a neutral area, and the winner will receive rights to the gold as well as the control of the entire continent. Colonel Cadmus Salgado is accused of war crimes he isn’t allowed to truly defend. Leo Leblanc and his seventeen-year-old son watch as Colonel Salgado’s verdict is delivered, and the punishment of death looms heavy in the air. After he escapes, Colonel Salgado crosses a river and seeks refuge in a small village. The townspeople catch him, and Colonel Salgado stays in Leo’s home. Leo vows to send the colonel back for his punishment, but he is at the mercy of the raging river blocking the path back to the city. As he learns more about the colonel, Leo develops a respect for the man he hadn’t expected.

“Julia Maiola will keep you turning pages as she delivers fast-paced action. Maiola moves quickly from one scene to the next, providing you with a story you can read at your own pace – whether it’s a quick chapter as you move through your day or a book you can digest over a quiet afternoon. Readers will learn the full story as they peel away layers from the characters’ memories and dialogue, and the author provides maps to help clarify the characters’ references. The sense of duty was clear on both sides as Colonel Salgado and Leo learned more about each other. The raging river seems to be the only barrier between the colonel and his execution. It gave the men plenty of time to learn more about each other, causing lines they thought were black and white to blur. Readers who enjoy a reimagined approach to historical narratives will love ‘Til the River Calms.”
